About the skipper

I hold a United States Coast Guard Merchant Marine Officer licence as a:

Master of Steam, Motor or Auxiliary Sail Vessels of Not More Than 100 Gross Registered Tons (Domestic Tonnage) Upon Inland Waters.
Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels As Defined In 46 U.S.C. 2101 (42)(B) Upon Near Coastal Waters Not More than 100 Miles Offshore.
Authorized to engage in Commercial Assistance Towing.

Here is the previous large format masters certificate, along with the newly required Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) card and the Maritime Consortium card (participation in a random drug-testing program as required by law).

I am ASA-certified BBC and Advanced Multihull sailor, and I have USSailing and an ASA Instructor certifications.

I have a Technician-class HAM license, KJ6NAI.

During the summer months, I try to go sailing at least several times a month. These days, I'm mostly sailing my boat (a Sabre 30) out of Brickyard Cove, Pt. Richmond. When I'm not doing that, I'm teaching sailing at various locations around the bay and elsewhere.

During the Winter, I usually go on some extended sailing trip, most recently to Belize, BVI, and Baja.

At one point, I started to get interested in racing, actually, multihull racing thanks to Thom Davis, who owns a great F-24 Mark II trimaran. At this point, whenever I happen to be one or more of a group of sailboats going in the same basic direction, I call it racing. Of course, it helps if they don't think the same thoughts.
I have included some links for local sailing clubs and related topics, but I am NOT interested in charging sailors for listing their names. This is a free page. Sailing is expensive enough. If there's enough interest from for-profit companies, I will then buy a larger yacht and retire on it in the Caribbean.
