Baja Sailing Adventure
Here's an update on the 2007 Baja adventure. The 2009 trip will probably be 7 vs. 10 days with fewer people, so the cost of the boat rental is a bit higher. It's still a good value. The trip was a wonderful experience, although the weather was a bit colder and it was a bit windier than we expected. The 2009 trip will be a bit later in the year, so the weather should be perfect. The best way to tell you what it was like, is to show you - Click here
Here's the original what-to-expect information. You'll probably have to add approximately $350 to the boat rental per person. Here's a link:

Here are the basic facts:
- You will be sailing aboard a Moorings 4200 Club catamaran in the Sea of Cortez near La Paz.
- This boat will be chartered by me through The Moorings. (Subject to availability.)
- The dates are January 20, 2007 to January 27, 2007.
- The cost of the boat is about $1250 per person (discount for double occupancy), not including airfare, food, and other incidentals. (See below and feel free to ask for details.)
- In general, you need to have some sailing experience (e.g., completion of an intermediate sailing course) or at my discretion.
- A $300 deposit is required to hold your reservation.
- Half the remaining balance must be paid within 60 days.
- The remainder must be paid within 60 days of travel, unless notified differently.
- Lessons equivalent to Basic Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Charter are available for a small additional fee.
If you have questions or comments, please leave them in the "comments" section in the form.
Here are some additional details:
I am going to be on the boat beginning Jan. 10th for a vacation charter, and I thought this would be a good opportunity for people to get some real hands on experience on a real charter. The advantage to doing this, as far as cost goes, is that it will be a substantially lower cost than booking something for a shorter time period. In addition,
- I will already be there, so no for-hire skipper is needed.
- A "long-term" boat rental discount applies, since I'll rent the boat for the entire time under my name
- Packages offered by sailing clubs are substantially higher
Some details about the boat:
For a general layout of he catamaran, see the following link. Note that there are four double berths, two single berths, and a single (or double) berth in the lounge. Thus, without much of a stretch according to The Moorings, I could accommodate 8 to 10 people. These catamarans sail quite nicely, and they have many nice features as standard equipment. Dates/Flights/etc:
The dates that work for me are for people to arrive late on Saturday, January 20th or early on Sunday, January 21st, with the last day January 27th or 28th (some flexibility on departure is possible).
Transportation to and from the airport is either arranged by The Moorings for a very reasonable fee to and from La Paz or you can arrange your own transportation to and from Cabo (that's what I'm doing).
Boat cost details for 7 days (approximate only, will be updated as I get more information):
- Boat coast per person = $1250
- Fuel/Ice/Water = $0 (included)
- Security Insurance (mandatory) = $40 each
- Charter Care Protection (optional) = $100 each
- Port fee (mandatory) = $5 each
- Transport to/from base = $40 each
- VAT Tax (mandatory) = $165 each
Other costs/issues:
A deposit of $300 is required to hold a spot on the boat.
Most of the berths are double berths, so this would work best for couples and 2 or 3 singles (some flexibility is possible, given the layout of the boat).
Airfare costs are approximately $300 round-trip depending on where you fly from. This is up to the person, and I have no control over it. We may be able to get a volume discount.
Provisioning is usually about $25 per day per person.
